Bim Ajadi’s New Documentary, Becoming Jazzy Whipps, Premieres on BSL Zone, Supported by Together TV’s Diverse Film Fund and British Sign Language Broadcasting Trust

We at BSLBT, in partnership with Together TV’s Diverse Film Fund, are proud to present the release of the new short documentary Becoming Jazzy Whipps, directed by acclaimed filmmaker Bim Ajadi.  The film follows the inspiring journey of Jazzy Whipps, a deaf content creator whose rise to fame was met with online trolling due to her deaf voice, and her brave comeback in the face of adversity.  The documentary has been released on Together TV, and will be released on our website on Friday 20th September.

Becoming Jazzy Whipps follows Jazzy's emotional experience after her 21st birthday when a YouTube video she created - titled “Can my family understand my deaf voice?” - went viral, amassing over 6 million views.  However, the attention came at a cost, as Jazzy was bombarded with millions of hateful comments criticising her deaf voice.  This overwhelming negativity had a profound impact on her mental health, leading her to withdraw from social media and silence her voice.

This powerful documentary captures Jazzy’s struggle with the intense backlash and her journey towards healing and resilience.  Viewers will witness her determination to reclaim her voice and her mission to make social media a kinder and more inclusive space.

Camilla Arnold, CEO of BSLBT, expressed her support for the documentary, saying:  "We are incredibly proud to support Becoming Jazzy Whipps and shine a light on Jazzy’s powerful story.  This film not only highlights the challenges faced by members of the Deaf community but also demonstrates the strength of those who rise above adversity.  It’s a privilege to collaborate on a project that fosters empathy and promotes positive change in how we interact with one another online."

Together TV’s Diverse Film Fund and BSLBT provided the vital support and funding for the project, aligning with their shared mission of amplifying diverse voices and empowering underrepresented communities.
